Summer has suddenly come to an abrupt end. We knew that a lot of shops shut in Polperro at the end of October, or at least just after the half term holiday, and you can see why. Visitor numbers have just dropped. Its not like we haven't been used to it, after all everywhere we have ever based ourselves has been in a tourist location, but its been a bit of a surprised how sudden its been, but to be honest part of me is a bit relieved. Quite honestly we need a rest. We have to remind ourselves that, when we had a business meeting in January this year , we had no plans to move either business or house, so its been a bit of a whirlwind. We have only been in our lovely new home five months and we have not really sorted ourselves completely yet. Don't get me wrong its been amazing and we are both so happy in both our new business home and at the new Ashworth towers. We are sooo pleased with how its all worked out, but its been a bit manic.
Summer has been great. We had a slow start as that amazing hot weather also meant no one was shopping. Why would you when you can spend all day at the beach? I know if I had had the time, that's where I would have been. But it built nicely and we are in great shape to go into the winter.
We wont be shutting. For the time being we have dropped two days a weeks, so will be open Wednesday to Sunday, but we may review that if it is very slow, and hopefully it will pick up a bit for Christmas. There a few reasons for staying open, not least because we do still have rent to pay and even the smallest amount help towards that. Curiosity - we really do want to see what happen and how visitor numbers vary. But mostly because we have a lot of stock to make for next year. This year, apart from other makers work, we have not had any spare stock and if someone bought something then we just had to go home and make another. Sometimes we got on top , but mostly we were playing catch up.
We are starting to get a little bit on top of it again, and to boost our winter income a tiny bit we have decided to offer a few things online......... well sort off!!!!
We have always sold online through a third party such as Folksy or Etsy, but with limited success. As a lot of what we do are one offs, especially the seaglass jewellery, it is hard to keep track of stock when you have everything in one place like a shop, where people can buy and then immediately you need to remove it offline asap. Double selling a one of piece is just not good and this year it would have been a nightmare. Anyway we have always found people are more likely to speak to us and deal with us directly when ordering. They see something on Facebook , Instagram or twitter and just ask if they can buy it, so we thought we would just make this slightly easier.
Now we are making more and more fused glass items, we can reproduce products a bit more, so we can offer a few bits direct off our website. But that is easier said than done. With the regulations and the problems associated with selling online and taking online payments, its just too complicated. We lack the time and the expertise to do this. We also lack the money for someone else to do it for us. So we thought we would have a little 'Mock' shop. Its really just to showcase the goodies we produce that we can sell to you direct. Anyway we thought we would give it a go, Basically we have put in a shop page on our website to show the most popular items we have with descriptions and a link to message us if you would like to buy. We will then send an invoice for you to pay and the goods will follow. The same as what we currently do but with pictures Haha.......
So let the fun begin....... go to WELLYDOG/SHOP
